William and Lynda Steere

William C. Steere, Jr., Chairman of the Board Emeritus of Pfizer Inc, Vice Chairman of the Garden's Board and Chairman of the Campaign for Science in the Campaign for A New Era: 2001-2007, has been one of the visionaries behind The New York Botanical Garden's recent renaissance. His interests in education and plant research have made him one of the primary thinkers in the Garden's strategic planning.

Mr. Steere's association with the Garden goes back to childhood. His father, Dr. William Steere, Sr., a noted botanist, served as the Garden's Director and President from 1958-1972. In 2002 Mr. Steere and his wife Lynda helped endow the new William and Lynda Steere Herbarium of The New York Botanical Garden, the foundation of the Garden's botanical research program. Containing more than seven million specimens, it is the fourth-largest in the world, the largest in the Western Hemisphere, and is widely recognized as a research resource of international importance. Its vast collections of preserved plant specimens, filed according to a standardized system of classification, are continually augmented by Garden staff and by gifts, purchases, and exchanges of specimens from other herbaria.

During the Garden's last campaign, Bill and Lynda Steere created the William and Lynda Steere Discovery Center, a major teaching facility where children learn plant science and ecology. In the Steere Discovery Center, kids perform experiments using real laboratory specimens and research tools.

Mr. Steere is Chairman of the Board Emeritus of Pfizer Inc and has been a member of the Pfizer Inc Board of Directors since 1987. He began his career with Pfizer in 1959 as a medical service representative. He moved through a variety of marketing and management positions of ever-increasing responsibility-both domestic and international-until his appointment as President of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Group in 1986. He was elected President of Pfizer Inc in February 1991. In May of that year he was also named Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until January 1, 2001. He was elected Chairman of the Board in March 1992.

In addition to serving on the Board of The New York Botanical Garden, Mr. Steere is a member of the Board of Directors of the New York University Medical Center, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and Dow Jones Inc. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Born on June 17, 1936, Mr. Steere graduated from Stanford University with a B.S. in Biology in 1959. He and his wife, Lynda, have three sons and live in Rye, New York.
