BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Warren Dean (1932-1994) was a historian whose publications on the socioeconomy
of Brazil and the destruction of its rainforest received wide acclaim as
models of critical environmental history. Dr. Dean was William R. Kenan,
Jr. Professor of History at New York University in New York City. He studied
at the New York Botanical Garden in the 1980s in research for The Struggle
for Rubber in Brazil (1987).
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Warren Dean collection consists of photocopied reports, articles,
reprints, correspondence, and a typescript relating to the botany, economy,
and history of rubber-producing trees of Brazil, especially Hevea brasiliensis.
An associated collection of journals, reports, and trade publications was
removed and integrated into the collection of the LuEsther T. Mertz Library,
a bibliography of which is included in the collection below.

There are 13 files of photocopied journal and news articles in English,
Spanish, Dutch, and Portuguese dealing with the Brazilian rubber tree (Heveabrasiliensis)
and the development of the rubber industry in Brazil. There is one file
of correspondence, seven files of photocopies and reprints, and three files
of reports. The bulk of the material is photocopied, some with minor annotations
by Warren Dean.
PROVENANCE NOTE
Warren Dean presented the collection as a gift to the Garden in 1994.
Processed June 2001 by David Rose under a grant from the
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH PA-23141-98) and a grant from
the Harriet Ford Dickenson Foundation.
