Incorporation at NYBG
Acknowledgements
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant MA-05-10-0504-10 supported the incorporation of the Kohlmeyer Herbarium into the New York Botanical Garden.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supported the digitization of the Kohlmeyer type specimens, as part of the Global Plants Initiative.
We are especially grateful to Drs. Jan and Brigitte Kohlmeyer for entrusting NYBG with their herbarium.
We are also grateful to Ms. Catherine Innes, Director of the Office of Technology Development at the University of North Carolina for arranging the transfer of ownership of the Kohlmeyer Herbarium to NYBG, and to the staff of the University of North Carolina’s Institute of Marine Sciences for logistic support during the herbarium move.

Kohlmeyer Marine Fungi
In the course of his career, Dr. Jan Kohlmeyer described 149 new species, 50 new genera, four new families and three new orders of fungi and produced 158 papers and four books. His book "Marine Mycology: The Higher Fungi " published with Erika Kohlmeyer, is the definitive reference on this group of organisms.
The herbarium built by Jan, Erica and Brigitte Vollman-Kohlmeyer housed more than 25,000 specimens (dried and fluid-preserved) permanent microscopic slides, and associated documentation, including field books, notes, photographs (slides, negatives and prints) from marine habitats all over the world.
The Kohlmeyer herbarium focuses on fungi that are not well represented in other herbaria. The Kohlmeyer’s research documented an array of fungal biodiversity previously overlooked, and their study of these microscopic organisms has contributed significantly to science’s understanding of the recycling of nutrients in aquatic ecosystems.
Since the Kohlmeyers are the foremost experts in the field, and a high proportion of their specimens are cited in their voluminous publications, this herbarium is critical to all future studies of marine mycota.
