William C.
Steere's 1949 Alaska Itinerary
In 1949, William C. Steere participated in an
expedition to Alaska to study of the role of vegetation in geomorphic
processes, including those related to the development of permafrost and
seasonal frost action. Eight different field parties were sent to sites
across Alaska from the St. Elias Range to St. Lawrence Island. The
bryological results of this expedition were never specifically reported
in a publication by Steere. The purpose of this page is to provide
information on Steere's bryophyte collecting sites for this
little-known expedition.
To obtain a list of
the bryophytes collected at one of these sites, visit the American
Bryophyte Catalog, and enter the relevant search parameters :
Province/State = 'Alaska'
collector = 'W. C. Steere'
specific locality = the name of one of the sites listed in the
itinerary.
Undergraduate interns funded by an REU supplement to
an NSF
grant
prepared the rough draft of the itinerary from the specimen database;
supplementary information from Steere's field books were added by Kevin
E. Indoe, who was responsible for the map application and the final
form of the itinerary. The help of Susan Fraser, NYBG Library
Archivist, is gratefully acknowledged.
