Information for Visiting Researchers

The research programs of The Plant Research Laboratory regularly host visiting scientists and researchers. This initiative strives to trains researchers who do not have access to molecular tools and provides an opportunity for colleagues who wish to collaborate with staff scientists. The Laboratory can provide training, laboratory supplies, and equipment. Usually, the visiting researchers are responsible for providing their travel and living expenses. Click here for information about accommodations near the Garden.

Interested scientists should contact Dr. Dennis Stevenson, Vice President for Laboratory Research, with project ideas.

Project proposals should include:
A short description of the project and its significance
A CV clearly indicating the level of laboratory experience
The proposed duration of their stay
An estimation of how many samples they plan to sequence, fingerprint, etc., and what genes they wish to investigate
What type of material they have to work with upon arrival (silica material, herbarium material, or they are hoping to obtain herbarium material here).

Terms for Working in the Cullman Laboratory:
The Lewis B. & Dorothy Cullman Foundation should be acknowledged on papers and presentations resulting from research funded by the laboratory
Laboratory curators should be listed as co-authors on publications when a major portion of the research was completed in the laboratory and training in lab procedures, project design, or data analysis was provided.
Certain general laboratory duties necessary for the communal function of the lab (i.e. weekly cleanup) will be assigned to regular users.
Aliquots of DNA extracts made in the lab should be left at NYBG and appropriate archival records for DNA extracts and sequences generated.
Silica samples and DNA extracts deposited in the Cullman Laboratory must have complete documentation and records (preferably for the present time in a Excel file). Label columns: family, genus, species, collector, collection #, locality, date, and voucher locality.
