BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Richard Dawson Wood (1918-1977), marine biologist and professor of botany,
was born in Toledo, Ohio on April 28, 1918. He received B.A. and B.S. degrees
from Ohio State University in 1940 and a Ph.D. in 1947 from Northwestern
University. From 1947 until his death in 1977 he served on the faculty
of the Botany Department at the University of Rhode Island. Wood was a
specialist in the taxonomy and distribution of the Characeae. He was responsible
for reorganizing the Characeae classification and publishing Monograph
of the Characeae
(1965) with illustrations by Kozo Imahori.
He belonged to numerous professional organizations, was a Fulbright Research
scholar in Australia, and won the Darbaker Prize in phycology in 1966.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The bulk of the collection is devoted to data related to Wood's exhaustive
Characeae research. One of three typescripts of the Index Nominarum
Characearum: An Index to All Known Published Names of Extant Members of
the Characeae (1953); the Monograph of the Characeae (1965);
and Kozo Imahori's drawings are included in the collection.
