BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
William
Wilson (1799-1871) was a British bryologist noted for his publication
Bryologia
Britannica: containing the mosses of Great Britain and Ireland (1855).
He collaborated with Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker on Musci Antarctici
(1839-43) based on botanical collections from the southern circumpolar
regions. He was born June 7, 1799 in Warrington, England and died April
3, 1871, in Paddington, near Warrington.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of correspondence covering the entirety of Wilson's
botanical career.

There are 43 files of correspondence on the collection, identification,
and description of mosses. Notable authors include Robert K. Greville,
George Jasper Lyon, Alexander McKinlay, James de Carle Soweby, Richard
Spruce, and Thomas Taylor.
PROVENANCE NOTE
The William Wilson collection was presented to Elizabeth Gertrude Britton
by William T. Thiselton-Dyer, Director of the Royal Botanical Garden, Kew,
England, in 1891.
