Digital Imaging Project
The New York Botanical Garden has completed the project to photograph
its approximately 89,000 vascular plant type specimens. This project is
part of a larger effort by the Garden to make information about its herbarium
collections electronically available. Over 82,000 specimens have been
imaged and are available in The
Virtual Herbarium of The New York Botanical Garden.
The digital images available in the Virtual Herbarium are not intended
to replace the actual specimens, but rather augment our Vascular
Plant Type Catalog. This on-line database makes information about
individual specimens easily accessible to scientists around the world
through the Internet. The vascular plant type specimens were selected
to image first because they are the most important collection in the herbarium.
This project has been funded by the Xerox
Foundation. Students of the Biomedical Photographic Communications
Department of the Rochester Institute of Technology and Xerox provided
technical assistance. The Imaging
Manual created by RIT can be downloaded by anyone interested in learning
more about the technical aspects behind our project.
