Catalog of the Tulane University Fungal Herbarium

The fungal collections from the Tulane University (NO) Herbarium were donated to The New York Botanical Garden in May 1999. The more than 8,000 specimens have been incorporated into the NYBG Herbarium. During the course of the incorporation project, Curatorial Assistant Amy B. Falder has been cataloguing the label information from these specimens into the Garden's institutional specimen database. These data, through the efforts of Senior Information Manager Kevin Indoe and the NYBG Computer Services Department, are available for searching. In addtion, several of these specimens already exist at NY and are available for donation to other institutions.

Search Tips

Searches in the Virtual Herbarium are by default word-based. The fastest searches are made by using whole words as the criteria. Wildcard characters can be used to find partial words, but search times will be significantly longer.

Use an asterisk (*) as a substitute for any number of characters in a word. (Example: "New*" in the Province/State field will return specimen records from "New York," "New Hampshire," etc.)

Use an exclamation mark before a word to specifically exclude that word from the search. (Example: "Agaricus" in the Genus field and "!arvensis" in the Species field will return all records of Agaricus except Agaricus arvensis.)

Use quotation marks to search for exact phrases. Words not enclosed by quotation marks will be used to return records with all of the words, but not necessarily in the order typed.

*The Scientific Name field searches the genus, species, infraspecies, and author abbreviations of a name.
Example 1: the search term "cinerea" finds specimens of Arcyria cinerea, Peniophora cinerea, etc.
Example 2: the term "Cooke" finds specimen records of numerous taxa described by Mordecai C. Cooke.

Author abbreviations can be found using Harvard University Herbaria's Index of Botanists.
