A Brief Note Concerning Specimen Records of
Endangered and Threatened Plant Species
In an effort to meet our obligation to protect populations of endangered
species from over-collection, some of our specimen data (such as specific
locality information) have been removed from those online records for endangered
species. These data are made available to researchers
.
We are aware that making our herbarium specimen data available
involves striking a delicate balance between access to data that are important
to research and the potentially reckless posting of sensitive information.
To that end, we are in the process of removing portions of records for species
listed in the United States
Federal Endangered Plant Species list and in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants.
These two lists, however, are not comprehensive. If you are aware of other
species that are better protected by limiting access to specific locality
data, please contact us, and we will update our database accordingly. We have
also removed portions of information from records of species from groups such
as Orchids, Cycads (including Zamiaceae) and Cacti, which are often
subject to over-collection. Please note that we have removed specific locality
information from all species in these groups, even those that are not explicitly
listed as endangered.
Specimen Requests
Can't find the specimen you're looking for online? Not all of our specimens are digitized. We may have it as a physical specimen - and be able to digitize it for you.
