Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman
Lewis Cullman and his wife of 34 years, Dorothy F. Cullman, are leading donors to the science programs at The New York Botanical Garden as well as a range of New York City scientific and cultural institutions.
The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Program for Molecular Systematics Studies was established in 1994 to broaden and strengthen the scientific research programs of The New York Botanical Garden. The Program also provides a formal link to the American Museum of Natural History, where molecular research addressing plant-animal interactions takes place. The scientific staff, graduate students, and visiting researchers of the Cullman Program are involved in a variety of research projects that employ a host of tools and techniques from the growing field of molecular biology to address systematics issues. Soon the program will relocate to the new Cullman Laboratories in the Garden's Pfizer Plant Research Laboratory. Field studies are also conducted extensively as an integral part of the Cullman Program, whose research may be thought of as both molecular and organismal in that studies of plant diversity require an in-depth understanding of whole plants and their genomes.
Mr. Cullman was the founder and president of Cullman Ventures, Inc. He is also a director of General American Investors Co., Inc. He joined the Board of The New York Botanical Garden in May 1993 and is now Senior Vice Chairman. He also serves on the Boards of Chess-in-the-Schools, an organization that assists some 38,000 students from disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout New York City develop analytical skills through learning chess; the Museum of Modern Art; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mrs. Cullman is on the Board of The New York Public Library and is the creator of its Scholars and Writers Program. She also serves on the Boards of the American Museum of Natural History and the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
Mr. Cullman was born in 1919 in New York City and graduated from Yale University in 1941. He earned an M.S. from New York University in 1942 and holds an honorary degree from Purdue University.
