Anatomical Lab

The microtechnique involves various methods of preparing material for study using light microscopy. The anatomical laboratory is equipped with a full range of microtomes for sectioning plant material, and light microscopes, including florescence capabilities, for observing and documenting anatomical features.

Cytochemistry, histochemistry, tissue clearing, macerations, and epidermal peels are some of the techniques used in the anatomical laboratory. Facilities include a Scanning Electron Microscope laboratory with a low- and high-vacuum JEOL microscope and all peripheral equipment. Collections housed in the Plant Research Laboratory include alcohol-preserved plant specimens, an extensive research collection of microscope slides, and a reference collection of seeds.

The results of much of this anatomical work are used to assess the phylogeny of the groups as well as to fuel studies in ontogeny. Morphological and anatomical data are often combined with molecular data sets obtained in the Cullman Program laboratories for phylogenetic analysis

New York Botanical Garden scientists, graduate students, and visiting scholars use the anatomical laboratory. There is also a volunteer-intern program that trains budding scientists in microtechniques.

Facilities

The Scanning Electron Microscope facility consists of a JEOL Model JSM T-300 instrument, peripheral equipment, and a photographic darkroom.
