Science has an urgent mission to discover and document Earth’s biodiversity in order to understand and preserve its irreplaceable resources.

Combining modern technologies with a century of field and laboratory research, the Garden’s International Plant Science Center is one of the few institutions worldwide with the resources, collections, and expertise to develop the information needed to understand and manage plant diversity.

The International Plant Science Center makes vital contributions to scientific discovery and for the conservation and sustainable use of the world’s plant life.

Our work at the International Plant Science Center is focused on:

Shaping Conservation Policies

Understanding Plants in Human Health

Unlocking Molecular Secrets

Preserving and Sharing Knowledge

Training Future Researchers

Key Facts about the Science Center

The Garden launched a new $100 million International Plant Science Center in May 2002. This major project included the new, state-of-the-art William and Lynda Steere Herbarium to house the Garden’s plant research collection, comprising nearly 7 million specimens. Called a “national treasure” by the National Science Foundation, the Steere Herbarium is used extensively by botanical researchers worldwide. Also included in this initiative was the renovated and expanded LuEsther T. Mertz Library, which represents one of the most valuable scientific resources anywhere in the world.

The International Plant Science Center campus will also include The Pfizer Plant Research Laboratory, for which groundbreaking is scheduled to begin this year. Today, the Garden’s plant-research programs are among the most comprehensive and diverse in the world.

The Botanical Garden "has become what no one quite expected-one of the leading institutions in plant science."

- The New York Times editorial, May 15, 2006

"For more than a century the Garden has been a leader in botanical research, and the Plant Science Center will keep it at the cutting edge of biodiversity and conservation studies worldwide."

- Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor, New York City
